Let’s Talk CTR Manipulation for Google Maps — What’s Really Working (and How You Can Test It Too)

I’ve been running experiments on how click-through rate (CTR) impacts Google Business Profile rankings. The results? Pretty surprising.

If you’re a local SEO agency or running a small business, you already know how cutthroat the map pack has become.

Even with solid SEO, a large number of reviews, and consistent updates, some profiles just stay stuck. That’s where CTR strategies enter the picture—it can be the missing lever that moves the needle when everything else doesn’t work.

So, what is CTR manipulation?

CTR (Click Through Rate) manipulation are actions that increase engagement on your Google Business Profile through consistent click-through-rate (CTR) actions.

By generating daily interactions like profile views, driving directions, and clicks, our software signals to Google that your business is popular and relevant.

Here’s what I usually simulate in a campaign:

The CTR program replicates the actions of real local customers —

  • People searching for your services (e.g. ““plumber in Los Angeles,”” or “best café in New York”), locating your GBP in the Map Pack list, and then engaging with it.
  • Clicking on your business in the map pack
Interactions like clicking “call,” “directions,” or visiting your website
  • Driving Directions to Your Profile Just like Uber or Lyft drivers requesting directions to your location, we simulate consistent navigation requests — signaling to Google that people are actively visiting your business.

The goal isn’t to spam or cheat the system—it’s to mirror real-world user behavior in a way that boosts relevance in Google’s eyes.

What kind of results can it bring?

From what I’ve seen, CTR manipulation can help:

  • Increase your visibility in the 3-pack (especially if you’re stuck at positions 4–15)
  • Drive more engagement with profiles that have a physical address
  • Complement other SEO efforts (citations, reviews, on-page SEO)

What I found is important for a successful CTR campaign

I’ve run CTR campaigns for businesses in multiple niches.

  • The key here is just slow, steady improvement in rankings over a few weeks.
  • A mix of branded and generic keyword searches
  • It works best for businesses that have a physical address and just need more engagement on their profile —not recommend it for a brand-new listing with zero SEO.

Want to Test It?

If you’re curious how this might work for your business or client, I’m offering a trial. I’ll set up a basic campaign for your GMB and show you how it affects rankings (using GMB Insights before/after).

If you’re interested, just drop a comment or DM me with:

  • Your business name
  • City + keywords you’re targeting
  • Website or GMB link (if you have it)
